Aroid
Arisaemas & Arums etc.

We have placed these closely related plants together so that those infatuated with them can find them with ease. All are tuberous and have flower spathes (colored leaf-like organ) that surround the spadix (fleshy spike). Most species require part sun (usually woodland type planting) and humus-rich soil. A very striking group of plants.

Amorphallus bulbifera $9.99ea

Ht. 1M. Z7. Incredibly mottled stems emerge in early summer and give rise to a huge heavily dissected palm-like leaf. When the tuber is large enough (about half a kilo) a large shell-shaped pink flower is produced with a deeper rosy reddish center. By the end of the summer wart-like structures (cormlets) form on the leaves and can be snapped off and planted to produce new plants. In warmer areas, plant at a depth of 10-15cm; in colder areas plant up to 30cm deep. In areas colder than Zone 7; lift for winter. Amorphallus corms may at any time delay sprouting for a season, particularly after blooming so mark where you plant them. Shade to part sun.

Amorphallus konjac $21.99ea

Ht.1-1.75cm. Z6. A massive divided leaf (up to 1.25m across) atop a green stem is heavily mottled with dark purplish blotches. When the tuber is large enough it produces a massive 1-1.5m tall flower. The spathe is the color of a dark purplish red cabbage and sits atop a 60cm mottled stem. The spadix is slightly lighter purple in color and measures up to 90cm long. We sell small tubers around the size of a quarter that will bloom in about 2 years. Amorphallus corms may at any time delay sprouting for a season, particularly after blooming, so mark where you plant them. Shade to part sun. Eventually the corms can weigh up to 8 kilos. This species is extensively used as a food source in Indonesia and Japan. Both of the Amorphallus species listed here are well worth growing for their impressive foliage alone.
